YET ANOTHER MARQ*E EVENT

The German/Italian Concours Alliance Soldiers On

Attention Weather Wienies:  If you kept your Garage Queen sequestered in its lair, you missed another fun event at our annual Marq*E Entertainment Center Concours!

Despite some of your fears, there’s never been a documented case of a Porsche self-destructing from a few stray raindrops.  And while we did get a one or two minute light spray just as registration started, that was both the beginning and the end of the liquid excitement.  Of course, some of us with open cabriolets exhibited unusual grace, lightning speed and a few expletives as we urged our power tops onward.  About the time the latches were closing, it was time to lower them again…permanently.

So, there we were with 18 Porsches and an eclectic assortment of Ferraris, Maseratis and was that an electric blue Diablo?  Indeed, it was.  (You’ll be happy to know that the Diablo was piloted by Luigi.  What could have been more appropriate?)  It was also great to have several first time entrants with unusual examples of Stuttgart’s finest.

How about a Randy Thomas’ 1968, silver, 911L, which while winning him well deserved “Dirtiest Car” recognition, was still in very good condition, and he gets a “pass” this time, as he had simply “stopped by” to browse, when we recruited him.  He allowed as how the car had been to the club race last weekend and back, plus out all this weekend in the intermittent showers.  But then…we’ve heard all those excuses before.  Right??

Meanwhile, Jennifer Huenemeier rolled up in a striking, 1987, 930, in metallic orange.  That’s right folks, this was a special order, match to sample color, originally ordered by her Dad, who has kindly passed the family jewel on to number one daughter.  (Which reminds me, why didn’t my Dad honor me with the 1959 MGA roadster, 1959 MGA hardtop coupe, the 1968 911L-Sportomatic, or the 1972 190 SL?  But…enough whining…).

In the sun, the color could best be described as a light, metallic copper.  The inevitable question of what would/will happen if some heathen damages the still pristine surface, and the “good news” is that Jennifer has the original spray samples sent by the factory for her Dad’s approval, along with the exact paint formulas.  So…there!

Our fearless leader, Sylvia “Shiny” Samuels, once again put a lot of time and thought into the planning, and this time moved our post event festivities to the new Wings ‘N More, who prepared tasty, varied breakfast and lunch buffets.  They did a great job, and everyone had a great…and filling time.  More carrot cake anyone?

So, when all the polishing, griping and sooty fingertips were past, we had winners in 4 classes:

Bert Brinson’s bright red 1987 911 Cabriolet with a Best of Show 391 points in Class P-5, and Amy Walter’s equally shiny red 1987, 928-S4, with 389 points (close…oh so close) in Class P-3.

Dick (the flying Aggie dentist) Mogle’s 1974 Duck-tail Carrera with 375 points in P4, and Don Sweitzer’s Speed Yellow, 2001 996 Cabriolet, with 382 points in P-9.

As was noted earlier, Randy Thomas’s ’68 911L earned “Dirtiest Car” hands down

while Trevor Trevorrow’s 1984 911, black Targa was the “People’s Choice” in the Display class.

Which is not to slight Boris Sanchez, whose ’99 Arena Red Boxster once again won “Favorite Color”.

The LSR Concours series is designed to appeal to both accomplished and neophyte participants alike.  It’s a “top and interior” competition, meaning that our judges aren’t on creepers checking your undercarriage with their white gloves.  Some of our regulars take their preparation quite seriously; however, what is true about everyone is that they’re at the event to enjoy the camaraderie of friends and colleagues with like values and an appreciation of fine cars and good company.

With the success of the first concours of 2004 under our belt, we invite, indeed urge everyone to participate in our next event, at a new venue, the Portofino Center, north on I-45, Sunday, May 16.  Check out the club website for the details to be posted soon.  And Weather Wienies, REPENT, and bring out those Garage Queens!
