2003 BBQ Fun Run

June 21, 2003

The Lone Star Region of the Porsche Club of America held its first "Rally"-type activity on June 21st. It was a Fun Run of 100 miles that commenced in north Houston at noon and ended 118 miles (and anywhere between 3-1/2 and 6 hours) later on the eastern shore of Lake Livingston.

The route headed North for a short distance on Highway 249 before turning north through Egypt, Keenan, and Montgomery. After turning East and crossing Lake Conroe, the route continued through Willis and made the Cedar Lake Loop off County Line Road before turning North and along the western shore of Lake Livingston.

After crossing the Lake at Onalaska, the route turned south to the end point on the eastern shore to Lake Livingston Estates, where the Fun Run participants enjoyed a barbeque dinner by the lake as the sun went down.

Most of the route was on two lane country roads through the forests (yes, there are) of East Texas.

The route took the 70+ participants through the "wilds" of East Texas along some very scenic routes. The driver's and their navigators followed somewhat cryptic route directions and had to identify landmarks and points of interest along the way. Each participating car received a cap, rosette, and photo of their car at the start line.
There were stops to find out interesting facts. When was Governor Wood married anyway? (1837) The next to last stop was at Miss Jeans's in Onalaska to pick up BBQ for dinner - one stop no one missed! About 30 cars eventually lined up on the shore of the lake at the end of the rally The first order of business was to compare notes, while waiting for the more directionally challenged participants to arrive.
The second order of business was the "chow line" of BBQ and all the fixin's from Miss Jean's . Everyone seemed to enjoy the meal, including several members of the Ferrari Club, who joined with the LSR members on the Fun Run. The prizes were duly displayed and awarded. From left to right - closest distance, most lost (with compass) and best scavenger. And as night gathered over the lake, they were still talking Porsches.
Three prizes were awarded. They were for the "car" that drove the distance closest to that measured by the Fun Run Committee (Michael and Cynthia Shassere with 117 miles vs 118.2 measured), the team that answered the most questions about the route accurately (Suzy Hults and her sister Patsy with 36 out of 39), and the "most lost" team, which covered the greatest distance for the course (Steve and George Cela managed to drive 229 miles in a 996 Twin Turbo).

Meanwhile, the Porsches rested and enjoyed the sunset before heading back to Houston.
